Understand what a people search contact result represents

A people search contact result is not the same as a verified current contact directory. Aggregated information may come from multiple sources, and a match should be treated as a starting point for verification rather than proof that the information is current.

If the goal is current contact, use a contact channel the person or organization intentionally published or confirmed. An older public-record address is dated evidence, not proof of a current contact method.

Verify a result through the right source

Use available identity comparisons such as full or middle name, jurisdiction, source reference, dated timelines, and unresolved mismatches before relying on a contact result. Start from known public context or affiliation, then look for an intentionally published contact channel such as an official profile, professional directory, or organization staff page. Compare the published profile or directory entry against the known context, affiliation, identity details, and recency before relying on it. Use only the channel designated for that purpose. If no verified published contact channel exists, use a consent-based fallback such as asking a known organization or service contact to relay a message rather than treating an old address as current. For government work-contact examples, an official staff directory such as the U.S. Census Bureau staff search is a published work-contact directory, not a general people-search service. If the information relates to an existing service, use that service's actual support or privacy page instead of assuming a universal contact route.

NARA resources can help with historical and genealogy research, but they are not a current living-person locator. NARA website search is not a search of every genealogical or person record. When an underlying official record or government office is needed, use the appropriate government office navigation route.

Manage people-search privacy and corrections

FTC guidance explains that individuals can use each people-search site's own opt-out instructions. Some sites may require identity verification. Individual site-by-site opt-outs are free when completed through each site's own opt-out instructions. Repeat opt-outs across sites and periodically check for reappearance. Opting out does not remove public records, and relatives or associates reports may still expose information. Removing a broker listing does not correct an underlying government record.

California data-broker deletion route

California DROP is a free service for eligible California residents. After verifying eligibility, residents can create a profile and submit deletion requests. Required profile information includes name, date of birth, and ZIP code, with other identifiers optional. Keep the 8-digit tracking ID private.

Data brokers began processing DROP requests on August 1, 2026. Processing repeats at least every 45 days, and status reporting may take up to 90 days. Public records, exempt information, and certain first-party data are not all removed.
